Fri., Jan. 15, 2010 - Seventh annual "Jazz Extravaganza," involving the Mile High Jazz Band and the Carson High Jazz Band. This yearly event raises money to help send the Carson High School jazz performers to music events, such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho. This year, the CHS musicians are going to a festival in Seattle.
Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010 - I conduct the Carson City Symphony concert featuring guest percussionist Terry Longshore in Pataruco: Concerto for Maracas and Orchestra by Ricardo Lorenz. 4:00 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Also on the program: Aaron Copland's "Buckaroo Holiday" and Cesar Franck's Symphony in D minor.
Sat., March 6, 2010 - I play keyboard for a wedding reception in Squaw Valley,
along with the Silver Strings, who perform some of my arrangements.
Sat. April 10, 2010 - The Millennium Bugs perform for Sertoma's
"Family Fun Night" at the
Carson City Senior Center. The proceeds benefit children of Carson City with hearing
and speech problems, cancer, and diabetes.
Come hear the sensational big-band sound of the Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Sheryl Adams and guest vocalist June Joplin on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. at Comma Coffee in Carson City. Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, is across the street from the state legislature building. Mile High Jazz Band, which formed in 1997, has been playing monthly at Comma Coffee since April 2001. To celebrate the nine-year collaboration between the band and the coffee house, anniversary cake will be served to patrons at the April 13 performance. General admission is $5 at the door, and free for age 18 and under. Swing-dance instruction, 6:00-7:15 p.m., is $5 additional. The Mile High Jazz Band includes four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones, keyboard, guitar, bass, drums, and vocalist. They will play about twenty tunes from their ever-expanding repertoire of selections in the style of Basie, Ellington, and more contemporary composers and arrangers. The performance is funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. Tues., May 11, 2010 - Mile High Jazz Band performs at Comma Coffee - 8:00 to 10:00 p.m., Admission: $5 admission, FREE age 18 and under Thurs., May 27, 2010 - Veterans Reunion Farewell Dinner - Mile High Jazz Band perform at Circus Circus in Reno for the 55th annual reunion of World War II veterans ("China Burma India Veterans All West 2010 Reunion"). This is my first performance with this group. Sunday, July 4, 2010, at 4:30 p.m., Sierra Philharmonic League's "Pops in the Park" - Reno Philhamonic Concert - directed by Jason Alteri. I'm singing as part of the chorus (Carson Chamber Singers and Reno Philharmonic Chorus). July 8 through July 22, 2010 - China Trip with the "Reno Choral Ambassadors" (Bella Voce, Sierra Childrens' Choir, and McQueen High School Core Vocal Jazz Ensemble. We visit Beijing, Xi'an, Hangzhou, Shaoxing, and Shanghai. Sun., July 11, 2010I do a presentation to the Beijing Harmonica Club in which I talk about American music and about three arrangements I have done for harmonica soloist with orchestra. I also present scores to these works and PDF copies of the parts to the Club. The Club performs a 30-40 minute concert for me and visiting dignitaries from elsewhere in China. July 15-19, 2010 - Attend the International Choral Games in Shaoxing as an observer. There are over 20,000 participants from 80 countries.

Carson City" music festival on Satuday, Aug. 21, 2010 (Count Basie's 106th birthday!), on Third Street from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. The event is free! Sun., Oct. 10, 2010 - I perform on keyboard with violinist Janet Snape at the Davidson Institute on the University of Nevada, Reno campus at 6:00 p.m. (Private party, by invitation, following the Reno Philharmonic performance.) Tues., Oct. 12, 2010 - Mile High Jazz Band performs "Autumn Jazz" at Comma Coffee - 8:00 to 10:00 p.m., Admission: $5 admission, FREE age 18 and under. Sun., Oct. 24, 2010 - I conduct the Carson City Symphony concert featuring guest harmonicaists Jia-Yi He and Tom Stryker. 4:00 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. On the program: Moussorgsky's "A Night on Bald Mountain," Haydn's Symphony No. 94 in G Major ("Surprise"), Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King," Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2" (featuring Jia-Yi He), Vivaldi's Concerto No. 8 for Two Violins in A Minor (featuring Jia-Yi He and Tom Stryker on harmonicas), and Smetana's "Dance of the Comedians" (featuring Jia-Yi He).
Sat., Nov. 20, 2010 - The Millennium Bugs perform on the Ruby Mountain Symphony concert at 7:00 p.m. at the Elko Convention Center on a program called "It's About Time." I wrote a 15-minute work, also called "It's About Time," to be premiered by the Millennium Bugs with the Symphony, under the direction of the Symphony's conductor, Henrik Jul Hansen, on the first half of the program. The new work is a composition which, in a non-rigorous way, covers some of the evolution of jazz and pop music in the twentieth century and make reference to "time." On the second half of the program, the Millennium Bugs perform a couple of tunes in a standard combo format. Performing in the combo are Howard "Speedy" Garfin, on alto sax, soprano sax, clarinet, and flute; Tom Styker on harmonica; David Bugli on piano; Nathaniel Hamer on bass; and Lee Warner on drums. Sat., Dec. 4, 2010 - I perform on tuba, MC, and do some of the conducting at the Reno TUBACHRISTMAS event at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno, NV, at 3:00 p.m. Coordinator is Todd DeVito and Principal Conductor is Gary Robert Buchanan. Sun., Dec. 5, 2010 - The Carson City Historical Society presents, "Christmas with Mark Twain" at the Bliss Mansion in Carson City, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The event includes an evening with Mark Twain (McAvoy Lane), dinner and a tour of the Bliss Mansion. McAvoy Layne and I present a piano-and-narrator version of "Becoming Mark Twain." Guy Rocha, former Nevada State Archivist, makes an appearance as "Rex Veritas" and holds a discussion with "Mark Twain" about the verasity of Twain's stories. Sat., Dec. 11, 2010 - I perform on tuba with the Carson Valley Pops Orchestra on its Holiday Program at CVIC Hall, Minden, NV, at 7:00 p.m. Free admission. Sun., Dec. 12, 2010 - I conduct the Carson City Symphony in the 27th Annual Holiday Treat Concert at the Carson City Community Center at 4:00 p.m. The Symphony will be joined on the program by the Carson Chamber Singers and Norma Conway's Victorian Dancers. The Singers will be performing "The Seven Joys of Christmas" by Kirke Mechem. Pre-concert entertainment by "Strings in the Schools" begins at 3:00 p.m. in the lobby. The concert features seasonal and holiday music in different styles from many lands. Special to the program will be the premiere of "An International Christmas Festival" by Symphony clarinetist Jonathan Rabben. My arrangement of Harry P. Guy's "Echoes from the Snowball Club," the first ragtime waltz, will also be premiered, and the program concludes with the traditional performance of my "A Christmas Singalong." Thur., Dec. 16, 2010 - I perform on keyboard with vocalist Linda Merrill and tenor saxophonist Rocky Tatarelli at Sierra Place Assisted Living, 1111 W. College Parkway, Carson City, NV, at 7:00 p.m. Sun., Dec. 19, 2010 - I perform on keyboard at KUNR's Sunday Jazz Brunch at the Nevada Museum of Art (160 West Liberty Street, Reno, NV) with the Russ Patrick Quartet (Dan Lancaster on reeds, Larry Mallarino on trombone, and Russ Patrick on drums) from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This jazz performance is hosted by KUNR Radio. Attendees may dine from the a la carte brunch menu from Cafe Musee, in the museum. A la carte menu items range from $5 to $15. Mon., Dec. 20, 2010 - I perform on electric bass (not well, but with enthusiasm) on the Carol Play-a-long at Carson Mall at 11:00 a.m. Performers include string students from the Strings in the Schools program and other mostly amateur and student performers associated with Sue Jesch, who leads the performance.
